In Mexico City last week, the Chair of Fair Trade Music International, Safwan Javed, addressed music creators from over 30 countries to share news of the movement’s new affiliate program. In Mexico City for the International Council of Music Creators (CIAM) General Assembly hosted by Mexican collective management organisation SACM, Safwan Javed was on hand to update and encourage the global community to support the movement.

He also provided updates on the campaign’s progress over the past year and introduced the two latest additions to the Fair Trade Music International supporter roster.

Safwan Javed detailed the two programmes of Fair Trade Music International: Certification and Endorsement. Certification is a seal given to individual music releases to provide consumers with information they need to make better choices when streaming or purchasing music. To learn more about applying for certification, the criteria can be found here.

Endorsement is for applicants (e.g., organisations, record labels) who would like to be a Fair Trade Music International supporter. Doing so allows music creators to have a level of confirmation that the organisations they are working with are dedicated to ethical, sustainable and transparent standards. Interested parties can apply here.

Safwan Javed presented the new release of Sara Forslund, the first Fair Trade Music International certified release from Sweden, as well as the FTM endorsement of Indian and American record label Amarrass Records.

Work is underway to increase outreach out to Spanish and Portuguese-speaking territories. Fair Trade Music International has been especially adopted in Latin America among independent artists.

CIAM is the unified global voice of music creators. It works to ensure songwriters, composers and music creators as a whole are able to express their concerns in front of governments and other forums. Made up of songwriters, composers and artists, CIAM also works towards achieving a fair remuneration for music creators.
